Hong Kong’s pickleball boom — who’s cashing the “pop”

Courts went from a handful to a crowd. Cheap public slots, pricey AC clubs, licensing maze in between.

If you haven’t heard a pickleball yet, you will. Hong Kong’s newest racket boom isn’t quiet — and it isn’t free.

Early 2025: private venues were a niche handful. By mid-2026, Midland IC&I’s property guide put private courts at nearly 40, stuffed into retail, commercial, and industrial shells. Community maps stretch wider — DinkStart lists on the order of ~90 bookable sites (indoor, outdoor, free LCSD lines). Different yardsticks. Don’t mash them into one “official” number.

The money ladder

Public still looks cheap: LCSD indoor badminton slots used for pickleball cited around HK$51–59/hour (Apr 2025) or roughly HK$57–78 via SmartPLAY on visitor guides. Free outdoor trial courts exist — often badminton lines only. Bring your own net. Bring patience.

Private open-play is where wallets open: often HK$100–180 mid-tier, HK$150–250 premium. Whole-court hire: mid HK$300–500/hour, premium HK$500–800. One Wong Chuk Hang club posts non-member HK$450 off-peak / HK$700 peak (membership shaves it; monthly fee extra). Paddle rental: HK$30–80.

Operators win when they stack revenue: court time + coaching + open-play + café or shop. Industrial space helps the landlord math (Midland: industrial rents far below retail) — after the licensing maze of clubhouse routes, fire upgrades, industrial Waivers, and F&B licences if you’re serving more than vibes.

What’s working

• Air-con + flexible booking beating sticky public SmartPLAY slots
• School pipeline: Pickleball Association of HK China trained 500+ coaches since 2017; Active School Programme hit 403 schools (Apr 2025 reporting) — demand still outruns course supply
• LCSD outdoor trial (from 15 Jan 2025, list revised 1 Apr 2026) keeping entry points alive across more districts

What’s grinding

Peak-hour shortage is real. Public is cheap and competitive; private sells convenience. Free outdoor trials often mean DIY nets. Licensing mistakes can torch renovation budgets (broker claim — soft). Quiet risk: mid-tier oversupply if the fad cools. No citywide occupancy or P&L we can cite — so we won’t invent one.

Soft close

Social sport meets classic city economics: scarce floors, clever landlords, players who’ll pay for a court that actually books. Fun game. Serious rent.
